2015 was chock-full of events that made writing for The GrapevineThe Root’s blog that covers trending stories on black Twitter, social media and entertainment—that much more eye-opening, hectic, fulfilling, hilarious and, at times, disturbing.

We’re shelling out awards, in two parts, to the biggest newsmakers from this past year who kept people glued to their social media timelines and newsfeeds. They had people trying to cram think-piece-esque ideas into 140 characters and inspired the funniest memes ever created. Here’s part 1:
