Watch: Does Claws Challenge Stereotypes on TV of Women of Color?

When you hear about a new TV show that stars Niecy Nash and Karrueche Tran and it’s all about a nail salon, thoughts of stereotypes of Asian women and black women immediately pop up. At least they did for me when I saw the trailer for TNT’s new dramedy, Claws.

But after watching, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this show is suspenseful and hilarious, giving us a Breaking Bad-meets-Steel Magnolias vibe! During the American Black Film Festival, The Root got the chance to chat with stars Judy Reyes and Karrueche Tran and the showrunner, Janine Sherman Barrois, to talk about the stereotypes of women of color on TV and what brings their claws out in real life. Check out the video above!
