Watch: Did Rough Night Steal From Girls Trip? Director Says Yes

Girls Trip, the new girls-just-wanna-have-fun flick starring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish, has been on a promo tour like no other. It’s been a full year of the production powers that be pushing this Hangover-meets-Girlfriends (shoutout to Joan Clayton, aka Tracee Ellis Ross) mashup and then ... Rough Night came along.

This similar-sounding/feeling/looking film stars a bunch of white actresses and Zoë Kravitz, and immediately after seeing the movie poster, many publications made the claim that there was now a white-girl version of Girls Trip.

While The Root raced through the streets of sunny Miami for the American Black Film Festival, we got a chance to sit down with Girls Trip’s producer, Will Packer; director, Malcolm D. Lee; and star Regina Hall, and we asked them about the comparison. Malcolm D. Lee kept it all the way real. Peep the video above.

Pretty. Witty. Girly. Worldly. One who likes to party, but comes home early. I got stories to tell. Prince (yes, that Prince) called me excellence. Achievement unlocked.
