Watch: Cynthia Erivo Brings the Fight for Freedom to Life in Harriet Trailer

The canceled series Underground breathed new life into the saga of Harriet Tubman. Now looking to delve further into the courage and determination that fueled one of the most important figures in American history comes Harriet, produced by Charles D. King’s MACRO, New Balloon and Stay Gold Features.

From the official press release:

Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, HARRIET tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.

You damn right, she did.

“This is the story of a seemingly powerless woman who accomplished the extraordinary to save her loved ones, and in the process became a leader of and inspiration for her people,” producers Debra Martin Chase and Daniela Taplin Lundberg told Slash Film. “While Harriet Tubman is a household name, most people don’t know the breadth of her story—not only was she a conductor on the Underground Railroad, she was a spy for the Union army and remains one of the few women to have led an armed expedition in U.S. history.”

Harriet stars Cynthia Ervio, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Clarke Peters and is written by Gregory Allen Howard (Ali, Remember the Titans) and Kasi Lemmons and is also helmed by Lemmons of Eve’s Bayou fame.

Word on the street is we could be looking at the next Oscar contender, so prepare accordingly.
