Danai Gurira is known to fans of The Walking Dead as the sword-swinging Michonne. But the Zimbabwean American is about to take on a new role that will have her raising a prolific rapper. Gurira has signed on to portray Afeni Shakur, Tupac Shakur's mother, in the late rapper's biopic, All Eyez on Me.
According to Deadline, the Benny Boom-directed movie, which is already in production in Atlanta, has had its fair share of setbacks, including Tupac's mother getting caught up in a legal battle with the production company, Morgan Creek. Once the dispute was resolved, Afeni Shakur signed on to executive-produce the biopic.
It was announced last month that newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr., a dead ringer for Tupac, had captured the coveted lead role.
All Eyez on Me will chronicle Tupac's rise to fame and the infamous East Coast vs. West Coast rap feud. No release date has been set.
