There are a few fundamental truths that we all know as black people. You don’t eat at work potlucks. You always ask who made the potato salad. And when “Before I Let Go” by Frankie Beverly & Maze comes on, you get up out of your seat and join the rest of the party as they do the Electric Slide.
We went crazy in our work Slack on Thursday watching this video of Beyoncé, her mother, Ms. Tina Lawson, and none other than Jay-Z himself doing the famous party dance to the song we can all agree the dance is most closely associated with.
Ms. Tina posted the video to her Instagram account, and the pure joy on Jay-Z’s face is enough to have you watching it over and over again.
Who would imagine that Jigga gets that hype doing the Electric Slide? Who would have ever pictured Jigga doing the Electric Slide?
Your favorite rapper is completing his transition into your favorite uncle, and we at The Root are here for it.

*$13 for 48 AA, $12 for 48 AAA, $8 for 20 AAA, $8 for four 9V batteries
Ms. Tina has since deleted the video from her Instagram account, but some Twitter users were savvy enough to save copies of it before that happened.
Come through, family. Come through.
DISCUSSION
Black people north of the Mason-Dixon line don’t know how to really get down to the electric slide. Jay Z needs to spend more time in the south. But seriously this is such a Black family holiday activity, no matter your economic status.
