Two Oklahoma State University students decided that the best way to celebrate not having classes because of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday was to paint their faces black.

The photo posted by a student presumably named “Abbey” was posted to Instagram and immediately caught the attention of black students at Oklahoma State.


Not everyone assumed the students were deliberately wearing “blackface.” One person noted that she often wears a face mask for her skin:


After receiving several tweets about the incident, Oklahoma State University issued a response:


No further statement from the university has been released as of Wednesday morning. It’ll be interesting to see if the girls admit to wearing blackface or say they were just trying to refine their pores.
