First lady Michelle Obama strutted her stuff one last time through the White House with her dogs Sunny and Bo.

It’s safe to say that the “People’s House” will never be the same again once the Obamas leave Friday. But for those of us in the Washington, D.C., area, we’ll still have their presence in Kalorama.

Since Day 1 Michelle Obama has exuded a sense that she recognizes how powerful it is for her and her family to be living in that house, both because of the White House’s history and because they are a black family. I’ve been moved by the way that she has shown reverence for that past but also challenged it (remember when she had a portrait of Thomas Jefferson in the background of her first official portrait?!), and I fear it will be eons before we have another first spouse of her caliber.
