Issa Rae’s long-awaited television debut is finally happening. Rae, creator of The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, is heading to HBO with her new comedy series, Insecure, Variety reports.
Insecure follows the friendship of two modern-day black women and all of their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations. According to HBO, Insecure will be produced by Prentice Penny, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry. Rae serves not only as the star and co-creator of the series but also as co-executive producer. Larry Wilmore, host of The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore, is the pilot’s co-creator and co-writer and will serve as consultant.
Rae, who will play Issa Dee, will be joined by a cast that includes Yvonne Orji as Molly, Issa’s best friend; Jay Ellis as Lawrence, Issa’s depressed and unemployed boyfriend; and Lisa Joyce as Frieda, Issa’s co-worker at an educational nonprofit firm.
Rae, whose brand of humor is a breath of fresh air, has been keeping busy over the last year. From having a New York Times best-seller to producing her own shows on her popular YouTube channel, Rae has proved that sometimes you just have to venture out on your own and make the images you want to see on TV.
