(The Root) — Chris Brown has elected to enter rehab after being arrested for assault in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, according to a statement from his representative.

"His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior, enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point," the statement said.

There is no official word on whether or not Brown has a substance-abuse problem. But the assault charge is a violation of his probation — he could get slapped with four years of jail time — so a stint in a rehab facility before his court date could help his lawyer argue that Brown is working proactively on his issues.

Related (sort of), just as news broke of Brown's rehab stint, a photo that his on-again-off-again girlfriend Karruche Chan posted on Instagram started making the rounds, and #Teambreezy is swooning. The caption read "Always & Forever ❤️". We guess they're on again?

This image was lost some time after publication.

Anyway, whether the rehab announcement is strategic or not, here's hoping Brown gets some real help while he's there. He needs it.
