Oprah Interviews The Exonerated Five | When They See Us / Netflix (YouTube)

Antron McCray, Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam—once known as “The Central Park Five” are now “The Exonerated Five.”

The five men, whose lives were tragically altered when they were unjustly convicted in two separate trials in connection with the assault and rape of Trisha Meili, have been on a heavy press tour to promote the release of Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us. The Netflix series is considered to be a chance for the men to reclaim the narrative that was snatched away from them, along with their innocence, freedom, and so much more.

Not until now, though, have the men sat across from arguably the biggest interviewer in current media—Oprah Winfrey. The men joined Oprah (who is also an executive producer of the film) in front of a select audience—our very own Jay Connor was in attendance—at Netflix’s FYSEE soundstage (curated to host screenings and panels during For Your Consideration season) to discuss the film, recount and reflect on their experiences, and focus on the lives they will continue to live going forward. They are finally free, yet forever altered.
