Watch: Jada Pinkett Smith Says You Can’t Diminish the Black Spirit

Black and Proud is a new video series on The Root that focuses on the pride that our favorite black celebrities, tastemakers and thought leaders feel about being black. Many of them talk about our resilience and strength throughout history, some talk about our undeniable talents, while others mention our dance skills, dopeness and more.

Whatever the reasoning, it’s clear that being black is an incredible experience, despite society’s negative narratives around blackness.

Jada Pinkett Smith, who co-stars in the new film Girls Trip, says that black folks have an undeniable swag that everybody wants a piece of. She also mentions our unbreakable spirit. Check out the powerful clip above.

Pretty. Witty. Girly. Worldly. One who likes to party, but comes home early. I got stories to tell. Prince (yes, that Prince) called me excellence. Achievement unlocked.

I mean, the sentiment is nice and all, but its really not true. Society is diminishing black folks’ spirits left and right. Folks are being emotionally crushed regularly by everything from systemic injustice to never-ending micro-, medium, and XXL-aggressions just for trying to exist in the world. I am all for #blackgirlmagic and all that, but we are not creatures impervious to pain and hardship. We shouldn’t be expected to rise above it all and persevere no many how many times we see those that look like us killed, punished, or just told that they ain’t shit.

This shit sucks, and I want to give up on the regular. A lot of otherwise promising folks have already done just that.
